About 60 people gathered in the Mansion to take part in the Genomics and Eco-Evolution of Multi-Scale Symbioses (GEMS) conference on Sept. 18-19, 2023. GEMS is a Biology Integration Institute funded by the National Science Foundation. It is based in the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, with partner institutions at Indiana University, The University of Chicago, New York University and University of North Carolina-Greensboro.
One of the approaches GEMS studies is the interaction between clover and honeybee pollinators, which helps spell out the dynamics of the myriads of microbes nested within them.
The group holds an annual conference, which alternates between university partners. Founded in 2020, GEMS held its first gathering at Allerton in 2021, and returned in 2023.
Does your group need a place to host its conference or event? Allerton offers several locations that can accommodate various size groups. For more information, email Christina Calcagno at clc@illinois.edu.
