Park FAQs

Where is the Park?
Allerton Park & Retreat Center it is located approximately 3.5 miles southwest of Monticello, IL in Piatt County. Plug in 515 Old Timber Road, Monticello, IL into your favorite GPS app and it will take you to the Main Parking Lot!

When are you open?
The park is open from 8 a.m. to sunset every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The McCraw Family Visitor Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where can I find a map of Allerton?
Find online maps here. Printed maps are available in the The McCraw Family Visitor Center (open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily).

Is the Park accessible?
Because of the historic nature of the property, not all areas of Allerton are accessible. You can find an accessible suggested path map here. Please contact us at 217-333-3287 or allertoninfo@illinois.eduif you need assistance planning your visit. Those with limited mobility can rent power chairs. Learn more and find the reservation form here.

Can I stay in the Mansion?
Yes! View our rooms (as well as those in the guesthouses) on our Lodging page and make a reservation online or by calling 217-333-3287.

What amenities are included in the hotel rooms?
All of our hotel rooms have TV’s with wifi available. Bathrooms include towels, hair dryer, soap, shampoo, and conditioner. Coffee is in the hotel rooms of our guesthouses (Gatehouse, House in the Woods, Evergreen Lodge, and Residence). Communal coffee is available in the Solarium for guests in the Mansion. Mini-fridges are currently available upon request for medical needs. See photos of our hotel rooms here.

Is there anywhere to eat?
The Greenhouse Café is open from early April through the first Sunday of November. Find hours and the menu here. There are also a variety of restaurants in nearby Monticello.

Do you have a gift shop?
Yes! It is located in the McCraw Family Visitor Center and is open from Wednesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What is The Farms: An Allerton Folk School, and how can I find out more?

I am interested in having a wedding or holding a conference/meeting at Allerton. Where can I get more information?

Do you have any job openings?

Are dogs allowed?
Yes! Leashed dogs are welcome. Please pick up after your pet.

Can I use public transportation or ride share services to get there?
Unfortunately the Park is not served by regular public transportation. We recommend contacting PiattTran to schedule a ride. Please note that while options like Uber may bring you to the Park, it can be very difficult finding a ride back to neighboring cities. Please arrange for return transportation prior to your visit.

Can I grill or start a fire to cook food/warm-up?
There are grills for public use near the Main Parking Lot. Individuals may not start their own campfires.

Can I spread ashes of a loved one/pet at the Park?
University of Illinois policy does not allow this except in rare cases in accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). The full policy can be found here.
