Experience level: All skill levels; ages 10+ (Parent/Guardian must register with minors)
Join scientist and professor Dr. Lisa Tranel as she conducts her research tracking changes over time along the Sangamon River at 3D Riverbanks: Community Data Collection on Saturday, January 16 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Studio and outdoors.
During this program, participants will learn how to use a 3D scanning app on their phone to take photos of the river and surrounding elements like the bank, sediments, and trees. These photos will then be used for 3D models to show the gradual changes of the river. The data collected in this program will be included in Dr. Tranel’s research and a public lecture and Q&A in the spring.
$15/person*. Register here. Registration closes January 14 or when capacity is reached. All sales are final.
*Students should wear clothes suitable for hiking and the weather and bring a smartphone or other device with Scaniverse downloaded and ready to use. Find where to download the app here: https://www.nianticspatial.com/en/products/capture

About the instructor:
Dr. Lisa Tranel is an associate professor of Geology in the Department of Geography, Geology, and the Environment at Illinois State University. She received her B.A. from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, her M.S. in Geology from the University of Illinois, and Ph.D. in Geosciences from Virginia Tech. Her research focus investigates how earth landscapes evolve over time though interactions between surface processes, tectonics, long-term climate change, and human influence. Her work includes analyses of the spatial distributions of erosion by glaciers and streams in the Teton Range, Wyoming, erosion and uplift in the Guadalupe Mountains in Texas and New Mexico, and river erosion in Illinois. Dr. Tranel teaches introductory and advanced courses in Geology and Environmental Science at Illinois State University where she incorporates both field and computing exercises to understand earth processes and water resources.
