Participants at an Altar Workshop on Aug. 7 spent time both indoors and out as Artist-in-Residence Lemareye Jones walked them through the process of setting up home altars, which can be dedicated to a variety of things. Jones said he began meditating during the covid crisis and found that a home altar kept him focused.
“When you have a wedding, what do you do? You say vows. That is something you are committed to. This (creating a home altar) is something that you are committed to, whether it’s God, a spiritual deity or just your loved ones or yourselves. That’s wholesome. That’s what I think is special about it; you make a promise,” said Jones, who wraps up his stay today as part of Allerton’s Rooting a Deeper Connection program.
At the workshop, Jones also led those present on a short hike to the Sangamon River to gather items they could use in their home altars.
“An altar is a specific area within a space that is used to focus on ritual ceremony on honoring, offerings and for numerous personal and spiritual reasons,” Jones said.
