Built by damming a natural spring, the Reflecting Pond is a cold-water ecosystem. Cold-water ecosystems occur when the primary water sources are springs or seeps. A spring is a place where groundwater flows out of the ground. It is the location where subterranean water meets the ground surface. Subterranean water comes from both confined and unconfined aquifers. It is unclear which type of aquifer supports the Reflecting Pond spring.
Our cold-water Pond provides a unique habitat for a number of state-endangered fish species. Among their specific habitat requirements are dense, aquatic vegetation and cold, clear water. These conditions are atypical in Illinois aquatic ecosystems, due largely to the abundance of exotic fish species in the carp family. Carp feed on aquatic vegetation and constantly disturb sediment, which decreases water clarity. When restoration was initiated in 2003, all carp were removed from the Reflecting Pond ecosystem.
Currently, Allerton partners with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) to utilize the Pond as a breeding site for state-endangered fish species.
In addition to keeping summer water temperatures low, springs and seeps are important in providing warm water to wildlife in the winter months. Spring water is consistently around 50 degrees F. Springs provide water and expose important wildlife food (such as seeds and nuts) when other water sources freeze and everything is covered in snow.
This water feature is one of the best examples of Robert’s influence on the estate. Its thoughtful positioning is a perfect way to both view the Mansion from outside and enjoy a water feature inside.
