Herb Garden

Originally Robert Allerton’s Cut Garden, this space near the Mansion now serves as the estate’s Herb Garden. Redesigned in the early 2000s, this relatively large herb garden contains medicinal, culinary and craft herbs and is an Illinois Herb Association certified herb garden.

Lavender lines the main pathway, while drifts of monarda, laitris, thyme, chives  and oregano fill much of the area with purple, pink and white flowers. One of Robert Allerton’s original Fu Dogs adds its charm as well. Some of the original peonies and iris from the previous garden continue to add their beauty.

This beautiful garden, maintained by some of our most dedicated volunteers, also serves a functional purpose by creating an educational opportunity for visitors to learn about the wide variety of herbs and their many uses. In addition to our annual Cooking with Herbs workshop, herbs from this garden often find their way into the Allerton Kitchen for use in food produced on-site.
