Plein Air Painting Supplies

Watercolor Materials List:

  • Watercolor field easel & drawing board (that allows you to have a horizontal working angle), Or folding chair & drawing board

  • Watercolor paints and a palette with a good sized mixing area, either in pans or tubes. (pans are easier for plein air)

  • An assortment of watercolor brushes

  • Water cup
  • Water jug or a couple of water bottles
  • Sponge, rag or paper towels
  • Sheets or block of watercolor paper, at least 140#, 100% cotton, no larger than 11 x 14. Recommended brands: Arches, Meeden, Hannameule

  • Painters tape or masking tape to tape paper down on your board
  • Any extras like salt, masking fluid, etc.
  • Trash bags

Acrylics or oils Material List:

  • Portable easel (French easel or pochade box + tripod)
  • 6 Canvas panels: 3 small – 4×6 or 5×7, and 3 larger – either 9 x 12 or 11x 14

  • A palette that gives plenty of room for mixing colors. Should be completely flat – no wells for paint. (your easel might come with a palette)
  • A metal palette knife

  • Paint – necessary colors:
    • Ultramarine blue
    • Cerulean blue
    • Cadmium red or cad. red light
    • Alizeron crimson
    • Cadmium yellow or cad. yellow light
    • Yellow ochre
    • White
    • Black
    • Burnt umber
    • Burnt sienna
  • Acrylic slow drying medium—essential (for acrylics of course )
  • Paper towels
  • Trash bags
  • An assortment of brushes – make sure you have large as well as smaller, filberts, flats. Synthetic/nylon or bristle.
  • For acrylics: 2 cups for water (one is for keeping your brushes from drying out)
  • For acrylics: Water jug or water bottles

Additional – for everyone

  • Charcoal pencil or graphite pencil & eraser
  • Small sketch book
  • A brimmed Hat
  • bug spray / sunscreen
  • Umbrella if you have one (that clamps to your easel)
  • Snacks & water
  • Possibly a small folding chair
  • Snacks and drinking water
