It’s Oaktober – and we are celebrating by planting trees! Not only oaks, but sassafras, Eastern redbud, witch hazel, and more. And you can help! During the month of October, all donations made to our Friends of Allerton Fund will go towards the purchase, planting, and care of TREES at Allerton! Make your gift here.
Areas of priority include completing our Old Timber Road Tree Planting Plan (see below), replacing Norway spruce trees in front of the House in the Woods, and landscaping around the entrance to the Wandering Woods.
If you are looking for more ways to celebrate Oaktober and all the wonderful benefits of trees, may we suggest:
-Take a hike on one of our 15 miles of hiking trails, including some of the highest quality oak-hickory upland forest in Central Illinois on the McDonald Family Trails
-Join an Allerton Park Bird Club Hike to learn what migrating birds depend on our woodlands
-Register for the Family Campout (October 8) and explore with biologists and naturalists who work daily to protect our native ecosystems
