Threshold, Hearth & Home: A 2-day Solstice Papermaking Workshop

Take part in Threshold, Hearth & Home: A 2-Day Solstice Papermaking Workshop from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, June 20 and 22 in the Greenhouse Auditorium. Participants will need to be present both days.

Day 1 on June 20 will involve papermaking: You will pull sheets and place dried flowers and herbs on freshly pulled sheets. Beaten fibers endemic to the region will be provided, as well as herbs associated with midsummer: yarrow, St. John’s Wort and mugwort. Participants are encouraged to bring their own documents, poetry, journals, notes and images to shred and beat into a pulp, which helps infuse their creation with deeper meaning.

Day 2 on June 22 will concentrate on pulp painting: Stencils and solstice-themed designs will be available for participants. This adds another layer, with stencils being placed on freshly pulled sheets and then painted through with a very watery and pigmented pulp solution. Pulp paint can also be used to ‘draw’ directly on wet paper with no stencil needed.

All paper must be taken to Fresh Press Paper studio in Champaign to be pressed and put in the dry box for finishing. Participants can choose whether to pick up their finished pieces from the studio or have them mailed via USPS. Postage and handling is included in the workshop fee.

$120/person and space is limited. Register here. All sales are final. The workshop is open to those 14 years of age and older.

If you will need disability-related accommodations in order to participate, please email owarren@illinois.edu.
