He learned how to conduct choirs in high school and went to college as a voice major\, getting bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education\, specializing in voice and conducting. \nRex’s musical abilities and passions led to a 30-year career as a full-time music director\, studio musician\, conductor\, and guitar teacher. He is a “people person” who loves to interact with others and see them grow in their abilities and understanding of music\, encouraging them to new levels of excellence. Those who have learned from him have always commented that they learned many new things in ways that were easily understandable and created a hunger to learn even more.

The Hoods’ generous endowment will provide consistent funds to keep the folk school operating for years to come by supporting public programming and educational outreach. \nThe MacFarlane Artisan Village (MAV) already hosts many Farms courses in the Studio and provides lodging for artists in the Residence\, both Robert Allerton original buildings that have been renovated. DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner (ages 18+) \nTurn copper wire into wearable art while learning a centuries-old technique at Jewelry 101: Viking Weaving on Sunday\, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in The Studio. \nInstructor Billie Theide will share information about this ancient process as students fabricate a tubular copper chain resulting in a flexible and lightweight bracelet or necklace. Students will make handmade decorative end caps and a closure from heavier gauge round copper wire. The chain can remain copper in color or patinated to take on a rich coloration from warm light brown to black. \nStudents will receive a toolkit to enable them to continue working at home. \n$120/person. She is the recipient of a Visual Arts Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and five Artists Fellowship Grants from the Illinois Arts Council. Theide has been recognized for her excellence in teaching and is a Distinguished Member and Past-President of the Society of North American Goldsmiths.

As for honey\, she kept a single jar in the back of her kitchen cabinet for recipes. Today she is a master beekeeper who never eats sugar. \nMaggie received her first hive as a gift in 2008. By 2010\, she was enrolled in the Master Beekeeper course at the University of Florida. From there\, things happened quickly to turn her life around. In 2012\, she started teaching beekeeping for Parkland Community Education and today she is a beekeeping teacher\, honey judge\, mead maker and master beekeeper. \nShe has also participated in honeybee research at the University of Illinois and the USDA.

SUMMARY:Beginner Sourdough Breadmaking
DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner \nLearn about the process of making sourdough bread at Beginner Sourdough Breadmaking on Sunday\, Sept. 27 or Oct. 11 from 2-5 p.m. in the Mansion Kitchen and Carriage House. \nInstructor Hannah Fink will cover the basic biology of a ferment and what it means to a sourdough culture\, how to mix sourdough\, how to maintain a healthy starter in your home and the importance of baking with regionally grown grains. Students will also get hands-on experience as they learn to mix sourdough. \nPrepared dough will be available to showcase baking and for students to prepare a snack toward the end of class. Students will take home their own jar of sourdough culture\, a sample of gains from Janie’s Mill\, as well as printouts of everything covered\, simple recipes and a thorough list of resources. \n$100/person*. The bakery started as a cottage bakery\, moved to a commercial space in downtown last year after several years of operation\, and currently is dormant\, waiting for its next configuration as Hannah is off on maternity leave with her second child. She revels in naturally leavened bread and quality pastries\, with a focus on organic\, whole grains\, mostly stone-milled and local from Janie’s Mill in Ashkum\, IL. She hopes to be a positive force in our community and centralizes her work on participating in our local food systems. Hannah has been baking bread for nearly 10 years and has been supported over the years by many mentors and inspirations\, she is looking to pass on the knowledge she has gained and continue this pass-down wisdom. Bread and grains are a staple in our community\, teaching the skills of baking help preserve their heritage.

She has also led classes at the local hospital and senior assisted facilities.

He learned how to conduct choirs in high school and went to college as a voice major\, getting bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education\, specializing in voice and conducting. \nRex’s musical abilities and passions led to a 30-year career as a full-time music director\, studio musician\, conductor\, and guitar teacher. He is a “people person” who loves to interact with others and see them grow in their abilities and understanding of music\, encouraging them to new levels of excellence. Those who have learned from him have always commented that they learned many new things in ways that were easily understandable and created a hunger to learn even more.

These skills are useful on stage but also in everyday life\, wherever you might be put on the spot!
