Then sign them up for our Garden Tour By Kids\, For Kids on Saturday\, June 6 from 10-11 a.m. Meet at the Greenhouse Patio.\nThis tour is designed with youth in mind as talented kid volunteers lead the way\, pointing out art and sharing the history of the formal gardens and Allerton. The tour will last about 45 to 60 minutes and will continue in a light drizzle. SUMMARY:The Farms: Drawing from Nature at the Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner (Ages 16+)  \nLearn various ways to look at the surrounding landscape and translate it to paper at Drawing from Nature on Saturday\, May 30* from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Illinois Arboretum (1800 S. Lincoln Ave.\, Urbana)*. (Rain date will be Sunday\, May 31st.) \nAward-winning artist Mandy Roeing will help students in guided sketchbook work while enjoying nature and using the basic elements of art. After a short demonstration\, students will choose a location in the Arboretum to draw from with instructor guidance. Students will meet back at the starting location for the last 20 minutes to share and discuss drawings.  \n$65/person** (Ages 16+) Register here. Inspired by the beauty and tranquility of nature\, Roeing creates color-filled landscapes and beachscapes that go beyond representation to capture the emotion of a place.  \nAll of Roeing’s paintings are done in soft pastels\, a beautiful and versatile medium that she is passionate about sharing with others through both her work and classes. She is an instructor at the McLean County Arts Center and the Peninsula School of Art and holds regular classes in painting and drawing at her own studio and gallery space in downtown Bloomington.  \nMandy earned her BFA in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina in 2004. She is the Vice President of the Illinois Prairie Pastel Society and an active member of the Peoria Art Guild. SUMMARY:The Farms: Barn Quilt Painting
DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner \nJoin the barn quilt movement by creating your own painted quilt block to use on the inside or outside of your home at Barn Quilt Painting on Saturday\, May 30 from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. in The Studio. \nStudents will begin with one of two options on a pre-primed board with their choice of design already drafted (see photo below; choose design at registration). Students will tape and paint at their own pace\, choosing from a wide variety of colors. \nInstructor Jane Cade will share a history of barn quilts\, techniques\, tips\, and discuss how to properly seal your finished piece after the paint has dried for 48 hours. DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner \nGet a first-hand look at how honey bees manage hive activity at Beehive Observation on Sundays\, April 12 & 26\, May 10 & 24\, June 7 & 21\, July 5 & 19\, Aug. 2\, 16 & 30 and Sept. 13 & 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. in The Studio and outside at the beehives. \nInstructor Maggie Wachter will provide an overview of seasonal influences\, followed by a peek inside the hives to observe honey bees at work. Traditional and Flow Hives will also be discussed. Each two-hour session may be attended as a standalone or combined with any or all other classes. \n$200/person* for the entire series here or $30/class at the links below. As for honey\, she kept a single jar in the back of her kitchen cabinet for recipes. Today she is a master beekeeper who never eats sugar. \nMaggie received her first hive as a gift in 2008. By 2010\, she was enrolled in the Master Beekeeper course at the University of Florida. From there\, things happened quickly to turn her life around. In 2012\, she started teaching beekeeping for Parkland Community Education and today she is a beekeeping teacher\, honey judge\, mead maker and master beekeeper. \nShe has also participated in honeybee research at the University of Illinois and the USDA.

He was studied these owls six to seven nights per week since December of 2005\, documenting their behavior in both photos and video. \nGlenshaw also received the 2025 Outstanding Educator Award from the St. Louis Audubon Society. \nHis outreach includes an average of 70 owl prowls and 50 presentations per year\, including presentations to various Audubon Society chapters and six presentations for the Smithsonian Institution.  \nIn 2006 Glenshaw was awarded the Citizen Science Award by the Academy of Science of St. Louis. DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Intermediate (have taken Beginning Weaving I & II or similar experience) \nExpand your weaving skills to learn a new weaving technique at Weaving Twill on Saturdays\, May 23 & 30 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Greenhouse Auditorium. \nThis two-day class led by Sharon Bowles will lead students in a discussion of various 4 shaft Twill types and design rules. Students will then write their draft pattern\, wind and thread a warp to weave a twill gamp. Students using their own looms will wind a longer warp to continue to explore different treadling for the twills on their own. \n$200/person*. Register here. She was taught to weave in a one-on-one class and wove two table runners in 12 (approximately) 2-hour lessons\, and she teaches the same method when she teaches. Sharon has experience in weaving with silk\, lace weaving\, 8-shaft pattern weaving\, parallel weaving\, block weaves\, and Shaker reproduction towels. \nShe has taught many workshops and classes to weavers’ guilds in Florida\, Ohio\, and Champaign-Urbana. She earned her Journeyman certification from the Weavers Guild of Boston in 2021 and a master’s certification in April of 2022. DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: All Levels  \nGet outside and express your creativity at Plein Air Painting on Friday through Sunday\, May 22 to 24 from 12-4 p.m. Outside and in the Evergreen Lodge (May 22) and The Studio (May 23-24).  \nStudents will start with a brief discussion each day at the designated meeting location then head outdoors to paint with their preferred medium. Instructor Deb Marett will guide students in this unique opportunity to capture the true colors\, light\, and atmosphere of the Park as it changes in real time. Working directly in nature will challenge artists to respond quickly to shifting light and weather leading to dynamic and expressive brushwork. Not only will students grow in their technique\, but plein air painting often lends itself to a restorative and calming practice.  \n$175/person* (ages 15+). Register here. DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner \nGet a first-hand look at how honey bees manage hive activity at Beehive Observation on Sundays\, April 12 & 26\, May 10 & 24\, June 7 & 21\, July 5 & 19\, Aug. 2\, 16 & 30 and Sept. 13 & 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. in The Studio and outside at the beehives. \nInstructor Maggie Wachter will provide an overview of seasonal influences\, followed by a peek inside the hives to observe honey bees at work. Traditional and Flow Hives will also be discussed. Each two-hour session may be attended as a standalone or combined with any or all other classes. \n$200/person* for the entire series here or $30/class at the links below. Registration will close April 9 for the entire series or three days before each subsequent class. Please alert the photographer or videographer if you do not want your image taken. \n\nAbout the Instructor\nWhen Maggie Wachter began her social work degree at the University of Illinois in 2008\, she had no idea that she would become a beekeeper. As for honey\, she kept a single jar in the back of her kitchen cabinet for recipes. Today she is a master beekeeper who never eats sugar. \nMaggie received her first hive as a gift in 2008. By 2010\, she was enrolled in the Master Beekeeper course at the University of Florida. From there\, things happened quickly to turn her life around. In 2012\, she started teaching beekeeping for Parkland Community Education and today she is a beekeeping teacher\, honey judge\, mead maker and master beekeeper. \nShe has also participated in honeybee research at the University of Illinois and the USDA.
