DESCRIPTION:Hear about the artistic process of artist-in-residence Patrick Neal and view some of his work at Painting the Four Seasons on Thursday\, April 17 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Mansion.\nJoin us for a presentation from this New York-based painter\, whose oil and watercolor landscape paintings are centered around the four seasons\, 12 months\, elements of earth\, air\, fire and water\, and night and day. They take into consideration his explorations of parks in New York City\, travels in update New York and past residencies including time spent in Monteverde\, Costa Rica.\nNeal’s talk will include a question-and-answer period\, as well as a show-and-tell presentation of new pieces he will complete while at Allerton.\nA cash bar will be available.\nNeal’s residency is thanks to the generosity of art lover and University of Illinois alum Len Lewicki.\n$5/person. SUMMARY:The Farms: Indigo Dyeing with the Environment in Mind
DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner (all ages)\nUse plant-based materials in an environmentally-friendly process at Indigo Dyeing with the Environment in Mind on Wednesday\, April 16 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Mansion Carriage House.\nIn this workshop\, instructor Jenny Knavel will familiarize you with a creative\, multicultural practice that utilizes prominently plant-based materials. Students will prepare an organic\, fermentation dye vat utilizing indigo powder\, an extract prepared from the plant Indigofera tinctoria.\nThe indigo vat-making method is safe for (supervised) children to use. Shibori\, a Japanese\, manual\, resist dyeing technique will be discussed. Utilizing basic shibori-inspired techniques\, students will be able to create unique patterns on their scarves.\n$85/person (Those under 16 years of age must be accompanied by a registered adult). DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner (3rd-8th grade) \nAllerton Park and the Monticello Area Arts Council are partnering to offer 3rd through 8th graders a Youth Art Studio on Saturday\, April 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in The Studio. Parents and guardians are invited to an art exhibit and reception in The Studio at the conclusion of the course (3 to 3:30 p.m.). \nInspired by the unique beauty of Allerton\, this workshop — led by artist and educator Belinda Beccue — is an immersive experience that allows artists to communicate through multiple fine arts mediums with an emphasis on the natural world. Projects will include canvas painting\, wire sculpture\, fiber weaving\, photography and more. This program will introduce a variety of materials and techniques\, expand skill sets and develop mastery and expressive style of the young artist. \nStudents should bring a non-perishable sack lunch\, refillable water bottle\, and wear clothes appropriate for a hike and messy art creation. \n$85/person (3rd through 8th grade). As for honey\, she kept a single jar in the back of her kitchen cabinet for recipes. Today she is a master beekeeper who never eats sugar.\nMaggie received her first hive as a gift in 2008. By 2010\, she was enrolled in the Master Beekeeper course at the University of Florida. From there\, things happened quickly to turn her life around. In 2012\, she started teaching beekeeping for Parkland Community Education and today she is a beekeeping teacher\, honey judge\, mead maker and master beekeeper.\nAlong the way\, she met fellow beekeeper Steve Halfar. Together\, they pollinate apple orchards\, chase black locust honey and keep their 50-odd hives thriving. They have participated in honeybee research at the U of I and USDA.\nDuring the summer\, you can find Maggie and Steve selling honey at the Urbana Market at the Square on the first Saturday of every month. She successfully co-operated a photography business\, Outer Glow Photography for 10 years.\nMuch of her drawings and paintings focus on what she calls “Random Pages”: Random bits from nature that become enlarged and abstracted to suggest something beyond their origins. She is a four-time recipient of the American Prize competition—including the winner of both The American Prize Professional Art Song Division and the winner of The American Prize Chicago Music Theater Award.\nLarisa Chasanov studied piano at the Belorussian State Conservatory and has been a lecturer at the Polish Academy of Music. After moving to Central Illinois she has been the accompanist for several area groups including the Champaign Oratorio Society\, University of Illinois Opera Studio and Illinois Summer Youth Music.\nCoambs and Chasanov have performed together frequently over the past 20 years and look forward to continuing their collaboration at Allerton.\n“To have the opportunity to be inspired by nature\, inspired by Allerton\, I think it’s going to be an absolutely incredible experience\,” Coambs said. “And to spend time with my dear friend and colleague to make music together — what a joy it will be!”

DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Some weaving experience needed\nContinue your journey into the world of weaving at Beginning Weaving II on Saturday and Sunday\, March 22-23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Greenhouse Auditorium.\nThis 2-day class with instructor Sharon Bowles will be a continuation of Beginning Weaving 1\, but instead of everyone doing the same article\, students will pick their own project\, measure the warp\, beam the warp\, thread the heddles to their selected pattern\, thread the reed\, tie the warp to the cloth beam rod\, wind bobbins and weave a sample of their selected yarn. Students will then weave samples from the other looms\, giving them a wide variety of weave structures they can try out.\nThis course is a great way to continue your weaving journey!\n$235/person. She was taught to weave in a one-on-one class and wove two table runners in 12 (approximately) 2-hour lessons\, and she teaches the same method when she teaches. Sharon has experience in weaving with silk\, lace weaving\, 8-shaft pattern weaving\, parallel weaving\, block weaves\, and Shaker reproduction towels.\nSharon has experience in weaving with silk\, lace weaving\, 8-shaft pattern weaving\, parallel weaving\, block weaves\, and Shaker reproduction towels. She has taught many workshops and classes to weavers’ guilds in Florida\, Ohio\, and Champaign-Urbana. Inspired by the beauty and tranquility of nature\, Roeing creates color-filled landscapes and beachscapes that go beyond representation to capture the emotion of a place.\nAll of Roeing’s paintings are done in soft pastels\, a beautiful and versatile medium that she is passionate about sharing with others through both her work and classes. She is an instructor at the McLean County Arts Center and the Peninsula School of Art and holds regular classes in painting and drawing at her own studio and gallery space in downtown Bloomington.\nMandy earned her BFA in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina in 2004. She is the Vice President of the Illinois Prairie Pastel Society and an active member of the Peoria Art Guild. She is a four-time recipient of the American Prize competition—including the winner of both The American Prize Professional Art Song Division and the winner of The American Prize Chicago Music Theater Award.\nLarisa Chasanov studied piano at the Belorussian State Conservatory and has been a lecturer at the Polish Academy of Music. After moving to Central Illinois she has been the accompanist for several area groups including the Champaign Oratorio Society\, University of Illinois Opera Studio and Illinois Summer Youth Music.\nCoambs and Chasanov have performed together frequently over the past 20 years and look forward to continuing their collaboration at Allerton.\n“To have the opportunity to be inspired by nature\, inspired by Allerton\, I think it’s going to be an absolutely incredible experience\,” Coambs said. “And to spend time with my dear friend and colleague to make music together — what a joy it will be!”
