DESCRIPTION:Discover inspiring hosta varieties\, companion plants\, and garden design ideas to bring to your own landscape at an Arboretum Hosta Garden Tour on Saturdays\, August 8 or September 12 from 10-11 a.m. at the Illinois Arboretum (1800 S. Lincoln Ave.\, Urbana). \nLed by Illinois Prairie Hosta Society (IPHS) members\, this tour will include an introduction to not only a huge variety of hosta\, but will also include some native plant species\, over 50 varieties of companion plants\, and an overview of how the garden design has evolved over the years. For several years\, they worked with Allerton Park to create an IPHS Hosta Display Garden there; some of that garden is still in existence today and is now a project of Master Gardeners. In 2010\, as part of our mission to promote the genus Hosta through a variety of educational means\, and at the invitation of the then Director of the Arboretum\, Bill Kruideneier\, we voted to establish a display garden at the Arboretum. From the fall of 2010\, until the spring of 2014\, volunteer members of IPHS donated money for hardscape and the purchase of shad companion plants\, designed and created a wishlist for plants to be installed in the garden\, donated their own mostly originator stock (OS – meaning purchased from the original hybridizer of the plant\, or grown from the original plant)\, and installed\, labeled\, and maintained the original area of the Garden. In The Hosta Garden at the University of Illinois Arboretum was awarded the American Hosta Society’s (AHS) designation as a National Display Garden.

Through the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener program\, volunteers receive research-based horticultural training and use that knowledge to educate\, inspire\, and support residents across Piatt County. Piatt County Master Gardeners support two educational gardens at Allerton Park\, the Herb Garden\, located next to the mansion\, and the Welcome Garden\, located between the visitors center and café. \nKay Carnes’ love of gardening began at an early age\, “helping” her father in his vegetable garden and has continued throughout her life.  She has been a Master Gardener\, a member and past president of the Illinois Herb Association\, and a panelist on MidAmerican Gardener since 1995.  Kay and her husband Dave live on 2.5 acres outside of Monticello\, a property that allows her ample space to pursue her passion.  Her areas of expertise are herbs\, vegetables\, and seed saving.

She earned her Journeyman certification from the Weavers Guild of Boston in 2021 and a master’s certification in April of 2022. Most recently\, Sharon taught Beginning Weaving I at The Farms\, and a 2-day workshop in four shaft patterns for the Champaign-Urbana Spinners and Weavers Guild.

While she specializes in Ashtanga and Vinyasa Flow the most popular classes are Beginners Yoga\, Chair Yoga\, Kids classes\, Yin Yoga\, Restorative Yoga\, and Gentle Flow. \nShe teaches Community Yoga and Full Moon classes through The Farms at Allerton Park and Retreat Center and provides free classes at Monticello Middle School and Monticello High School. Josie has also led classes at the local hospital and senior assisted facilities.

DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner \nGet a first-hand look at how honey bees manage hive activity at Beehive Observation on Sundays\, April 12 & 26\, May 10 & 24\, June 7 & 21\, July 5 & 19\, Aug. 2\, 16 & 30 and Sept. 13 & 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. in The Studio and outside at the beehives. \nInstructor Maggie Wachter will provide an overview of seasonal influences\, followed by a peek inside the hives to observe honey bees at work. Traditional and Flow Hives will also be discussed. As for honey\, she kept a single jar in the back of her kitchen cabinet for recipes. Today she is a master beekeeper who never eats sugar. \nMaggie received her first hive as a gift in 2008. By 2010\, she was enrolled in the Master Beekeeper course at the University of Florida. From there\, things happened quickly to turn her life around. In 2012\, she started teaching beekeeping for Parkland Community Education and today she is a beekeeping teacher\, honey judge\, mead maker and master beekeeper. \nShe has also participated in honeybee research at the University of Illinois and the USDA.

Learn more at Mystic Mondays: Intro to Tarot on Monday\, Sept. 14 from 6-8 p.m. in the Mansion Library. \nInstructor Charlie Rainbow Wolf will guide students through the history of tarot\, what it does and doesn’t do\, and how to detangle myth from method when learning to read the cards. Students will then use the cards to determine how to intuitively interpret tarot for their own purposes and learn how to start reading for others. \nTarot cards are included with registration. \n$75/person*. She earned her Journeyman certification from the Weavers Guild of Boston in 2021 and a master’s certification in April of 2022. Most recently\, Sharon taught Beginning Weaving I at The Farms\, and a 2-day workshop in four shaft patterns for the Champaign-Urbana Spinners and Weavers Guild.

She is the recipient of a Visual Arts Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and five Artists Fellowship Grants from the Illinois Arts Council. Theide has been recognized for her excellence in teaching and is a Distinguished Member and Past-President of the Society of North American Goldsmiths.
