DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner (all ages)\nLearn more about birdwatching and how to contribute to important research at Intro to Birding and eBird on Friday\, Feb. 27 from 9 to 11 a.m. in The Studio and outdoors.\nAllerton Natural Areas Manager Nate Beccue will help students learn about bird identification during the cooler months\, when fewer species are on the landscape. Participants will learn how to identify year-round residents as well as winter visitors by focusing on distinctive features like plumage patterns\, feeding behavior and vocalizations.\nA key aspect of the course will be learning to use eBird\, a tool for birders developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, which allows users to log their sightings\, track seasonal patterns\, access local checklists and help anticipate which species are likely be seen. The app helps in global conservation efforts by compiling valuable data about bird populations and trends.\nThe course will be split between learning in the classroom and birding in the field. Instructor Charlie Rainbow Wolf will help students learn how to read a pattern graph to knit with two different colors to create those patterns. DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner\nLearn about an important landscaping skill at Intro to Tree Pruning on Monday\, Feb. 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the llinois Arboretum (1800 S. Lincoln Ave.\, Urbana)*.\nYoung shade trees face a variety of challenges in the landscape which can lead to low survival rates. Extension Educator Ryan Pankau will help students learn how proper pruning early on can set trees up for a lifetime of healthy canopy structure. This in-depth workshop will include both lecture materials and hands-on pruning examples.\nThis course will also cover the proper pruning tools to use\, when to use them and how to prune young trees\, as well as maintenance and sanitation strategies when pruning.\nStudents are encouraged to bring their favorite pruning tools to class.\n$25/person.
