DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner\nLearn how to use bark patterns and buds to identify “naked” trees (without their leaves!) at an Arboretum “Naked” Tree ID Hike on Thursday\, March 26 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Illinois Arboretum (1800 S. Lincoln Ave.\, Urbana)*.\nExtension Educator Ryan Pankau will lead students on a short hike around the Arboretum to identify trees native to Illinois and discuss various qualities of these awesome plants. (And such a food!) Keeping honey bees happy and healthy is essential.\nInstructor Maggie Wachter will share the basics of starting a new hive: how to get bees\, the honey bee life cycle\, nutrition\, equipment and what to do about mites. Would-be beekeepers and others with a lively interest in nature are welcome.\n$25/person. Register here. Please alert the photographer or videographer if you do not want your image taken. \nAbout the Instructor\nWhen Maggie Wachter began her social work degree at the University of Illinois in 2008\, she had no idea that she would become a beekeeper. As for honey\, she kept a single jar in the back of her kitchen cabinet for recipes. Today she is a master beekeeper who never eats sugar.\nMaggie received her first hive as a gift in 2008. By 2010\, she was enrolled in the Master Beekeeper course at the University of Florida. From there\, things happened quickly to turn her life around. In 2012\, she started teaching beekeeping for Parkland Community Education and today she is a beekeeping teacher\, honey judge\, mead maker and master beekeeper.\nAlong the way\, she met fellow beekeeper Steve Halfar. Together\, they pollinate apple orchards\, chase black locust honey and keep their 50-odd hives thriving. They have participated in honeybee research at the U of I and USDA.\nDuring the summer\, you can find Maggie and Steve selling honey at the Urbana Market at the Square on the first Saturday of every month. DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner \nLearn the basics of working with a loom at Beginning Weaving I (Morning) on Saturdays\, Feb. 14 through March 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Greenhouse Auditorium. \nThis 5-week class led by Sharon Bowles will encompass all aspects of beginner weaving as students create a table runner. Participants will become familiar with weaving terminology\, parts of the loom\, figuring the weaving pattern for the width of the loom and project\, measuring out the warp\, beaming the warp back to front\, threading heddles\, threading the reed\, tying on the warp\, and winding bobbins. \n$250/person*. She was taught to weave in a one-on-one class and wove two table runners in 12 (approximately) 2-hour lessons\, and she teaches the same method when she teaches. Sharon has experience in weaving with silk\, lace weaving\, 8-shaft pattern weaving\, parallel weaving\, block weaves\, and Shaker reproduction towels. \nShe has taught many workshops and classes to weavers’ guilds in Florida\, Ohio\, and Champaign-Urbana. She earned her Journeyman certification from the Weavers Guild of Boston in 2021 and a master’s certification in April of 2022. Instructor Charlie Rainbow Wolf will help students learn how to read a pattern graph to knit with two different colors to create those patterns. DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner (Ages 13+) \nWhether you want to learn to knit or just need a refresher\, enroll in Knitting 101 on Sundays\, March 8 & 15 from 1 to 4 p.m. in The Studio. \nFiber artist Billie Theide will present the basics of knitting\, including needle and yarn selection. Students will learn how to cast on\, basic stitches\, how to read work\, fix mistakes\, cast off and make fringe and pom poms. \n$95/person* (Ages 13+. Ages 13-17 should be accompanied by an adult\, who does not need to register.) Register here. Registration will close March 1 or when capacity is reached. All sales are final. \n*Students should bring one of these two supply options (and are advised to purchase them as soon as possible\, since availability can change): \nOPTION 1: \n— 2 skeins of Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick yarn. This is classified as a Super Bulky 6 yarn made of 100% recycled plastic. There are 223 yards per skein; the two skeins must be of the same dye lot. It is hand-washable; lay flat to dry. Avoid purchasing a dark colorway. \n— 1 pair of Clover Takumi 9″ Bamboo Knitting Needles\, US 13 single pointed straights. \nOPTION 2: \n— 3 skeins of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick Yarn. This is classified as Super Bulky 6 yarn made of 80% acrylic and 20% wool. There are 106 yards per skein; the three skeins must be of the same dye lot. It is machine washable. Please alert the photographer or videographer if you do not want your image taken. \nAbout the instructor \nBillie Theide is a former chair of the Crafts Program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign\, where she is Professor Emerita. Theide is a metalsmith\, jeweler and ceramicist. Her work is in public art collections around the world including the Smithsonian\, Museum of Arts & Design in New York City\, Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City and the Racine Art Museum\, among others. \nShe is the recipient of a Visual Arts Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and five Artists Fellowship Grants from the Illinois Arts Council.
