
The Farms: Horticulture Tour
Get an in-depth look at the design and horticulture of Allerton’s Formal Gardens during a Horticulture Tour on Saturday, June 7 from 10 to 11 a.m. Meet at the Greenhouse Patio.
Join Ruth Mitchell to learn about Allerton’s 14 formal gardens, created by Robert Allerton between 1899 and 1946. Since the donation of the property to the University of Illinois in 1946, the gardens have been lovingly cared for by Park staff. Come see for yourself at this tour that will be both beautiful and informative.

About the instructor
Ruth Mitchell was bitten by the gardening bug at a young age, and has pursued it as a hobbyist ever since. After retiring from the U of I, she became a Master Gardener pursuing her interests in botany, horticulture, and garden design, as well as historical gardens in the U.S. and Europe. She has been delighted to participate in introducing visitors to the multifaceted gardens at Allerton Park.

The Farms: An Allerton Folk School, offers classes, workshops, and gatherings focusing on art, outdoor education, science, storytelling, and wellness. All experiences value hands-on, experiential teaching and learning, and are facilitated by and for the members of the community.
