DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginners \nJoin Allerton Natural Areas staff for Winter Bird Hikes on Fridays\, Nov. 7\, Dec. 5\, Jan. 2\, Feb. 6 & March 6 from 9 to 11 a.m. Meet in the Main Parking Lot. If the starting location changes\, participants will receive an email the day before. New location information will also be posted on the Allerton Park Bird Club Facebook page. \nIn the winter months the Park is home to six species of woodpeckers\, four species of owls and a long list of other hardy winter species. This time of year is a great time to start learning about our local bird species! \nA limited number of binoculars will be available on a first-come basis. At times the hikes will leave the trails\, so dress accordingly. \n$10/person. Register here. Hikes are free for Allerton Bird Club members. Join the Bird Club here. All sales are final. Please alert the photographer or videographer if you do not want your image taken. \nAbout the instructor \nMark Glenshaw is an award-winning naturalist from St. Louis\, Missouri who observes\, documents and performs outreach regarding the wild Great Horned Owls that live in Forest Park — a large urban park in St. Louis. He was studied these owls six to seven nights per week since December of 2005\, documenting their behavior in both photos and video. \nGlenshaw also received the 2025 Outstanding Educator Award from the St. Louis Audubon Society. \nHis outreach includes an average of 70 owl prowls and 50 presentations per year\, including presentations to various Audubon Society chapters and six presentations for the Smithsonian Institution. \nIn 2006 Glenshaw was awarded the Citizen Science Award by the Academy of Science of St. Louis. He is also a Certified Interpretive Guide\, a certified Missouri Master Naturalist and a volunteer for Forest Park Forever. \nAbout The Farms \nThe Farms: An Allerton Folk School\, offers classes\, workshops\, and gatherings focusing on art\, outdoor education\, science\, storytelling\, and wellness. All experiences value hands-on\, experiential teaching and learning\, and are facilitated by and for the members of the community. \nFind the complete Spring Session schedule here.
