SUMMARY:The Farms: Beginning Weaving II
DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Some weaving experience needed\nContinue your journey into the world of weaving at Beginning Weaving II on Saturday and Sunday\, Nov. 1-2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Greenhouse Auditorium.\nThis 2-day class with instructor Sharon Bowles will be a continuation of Beginning Weaving I\, but instead of everyone doing the same article\, students will pick their own project\, measure the warp\, beam the warp\, thread the heddles to their selected pattern\, thread the reed\, tie the warp to the cloth beam rod\, wind bobbins and weave a sample of their selected yarn. Students will then weave samples from the other looms\, giving them a wide variety of weave structures they can try out.\nThis course is a great way to continue your weaving journey!\n$250/person*. She was taught to weave in a one-on-one class and wove two table runners in 12 (approximately) 2-hour lessons\, and she teaches the same method when she teaches. Sharon has experience in weaving with silk\, lace weaving\, 8-shaft pattern weaving\, parallel weaving\, block weaves\, and Shaker reproduction towels.\nSharon has experience in weaving with silk\, lace weaving\, 8-shaft pattern weaving\, parallel weaving\, block weaves\, and Shaker reproduction towels. She has taught many workshops and classes to weavers’ guilds in Florida\, Ohio\, and Champaign-Urbana. DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner \nCreate prints that mimic pen and ink drawings at Intaglio Printmaking on Thursday\, Nov. 6 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in The Studio. \nLocal artist and art educator Sally Walsh will guide students as they create an Intaglio print. While printmaking usually involves an acid bath\, oil-based inks and solvents\, students will instead learn how to use all non-toxic and fumeless materials to accomplish the same result. \nNo prior drawing or printmaking experience is needed\, but some hand strength is required to operate the press. \nAll participants will go home with at least one 5×7-inch print but may create more as time allows. \n$50/person*. DESCRIPTION:Take part in an immersive outdoor experience with Allerton Artist-in-Residence Michael Workman at Transitive Landscapes: A Guided Walk & Field Atlas Assembly on Sunday\, Nov. 9 from 12 to 1 p.m. Meet at the McCraw Family Visitor Center (park in the Visitor Center Parking Lot on Old Timber Road).\nParticipants will follow a mapped path through the gardens and wooded trails\, and listen to short readings at designated stops that will weave excerpts from Workman’s Transitive Landscapes writings with the natural landscape. At each station\, field cards with poetic fragments will be passed out to encourage responses and capture sensory impressions of sound\, light\, texture and memory.\nThe event will then move to the Greenhouse Auditorium\, where responses will be collected into a communal poetic field atlas — a temporary installation and digital record reflecting the interplay between the event’s experience and those who experienced it. Please alert the photographer or videographer if you do not want your image taken.\nAbout the instructors\nHeidi Leuszler grew up harvesting and foraging wherever she lived: mangos in Florida\, morels and mustang grapes from the back acre in Missouri\, wild strawberries and holly grapes in the Colorado mountains and chokecherries in North Dakota. Those passions remained as she added culinary skills in addition to becoming a professor of environmental science\, ecology and botany at Parkland College. She started Berries and Flour in Champaign as the synergy of several passions: culinary\, ecology\, growing of plants\, foraging and teaching people about the plentiful Midwest land.\nAnn Coddington utilizes a variety of ancient fiber techniques including twining\, looping\, and netting in her sculptural forms. Her work has been shown across the United States and internationally with recent exhibitions\, including currently at the McLean County Arts Center in Bloomington as well as recent shows at Gallery Jennings Kerr in New South Wales and Basketry Now at Textile Center in Minneapolis. Ann is a Professor of Art and Graduate Coordinator Emeritus from Eastern Illinois University. She received her MFA from the University of Illinois Sculpture Department\, and her BFA from the Colorado State University Fibers Department. She is active teaching sculptural twining workshops around the world\, recently at the Fibre Arts Australia and Fibre Arts New Zealand and this fall at the Penland School of Arts and Crafts. As for honey\, she kept a single jar in the back of her kitchen cabinet for recipes. Today she is a master beekeeper who never eats sugar.\nMaggie received her first hive as a gift in 2008. By 2010\, she was enrolled in the Master Beekeeper course at the University of Florida. From there\, things happened quickly to turn her life around.
