SUMMARY:The Farms: Dances of the Gilded Age: A Fancy Dress Ball
DESCRIPTION:You won’t want to miss the final class of Dances of the Gilded Age\, which will be A Fancy Dress Ball on Monday\, March 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Mansion.\nLed by instructor Jeanette Watts\, the evening will be devoted to dance party games called “Germans”\, along with mixers\, quadrilles\, set dances and the two most popular dances of the early 1900s — the waltz and the two-step.\nThe dress code? Masks are not required\, but with it being the day before Mardi Gras it would be a great time to wear one! Fancy Dress\, which at one time basically meant Halloween\, refers to attending as a historical figure\, character from literature or other fanciful thing (a peacock\, a butterfly\, even an electric light!). So pull out anything you’ve worn to a Renaissance festival\, or that tuxedo/prom dress at the back of your closet and come join the revelry!\nIf you haven’t attended previous sessions of Dances of the Gilded Age\, you should still get to the Fancy Dress Ball. DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Intermediate\nThose who completed beginner mushroom foraging classes at The Farms or have experience in identification can continue their journey at Intermediate Mushroom Foraging on Saturdays\, Aug. 9\, 16 & 23 from 9 to 11 a.m. outdoors (rain or shine). Meet at the Greenhouse Cafè Patio (in case of rain meet inside the Visitor Center).\nInstructor Lee Schuler will lead two-hour hikes to find\, collect and come together to identify mushrooms from the property. Classes will also cover environmental and growth habit\, morphology\, and edibility for each species that is found. She revels in naturally leavened bread and quality pastries and focuses on organic whole grains\, mostly stone milled from Janie’s Mill in Ashkum. \nShe is of the firm belief that a “toothy dose of good butter” is the best start\, which led to the name of her business that bakes for special orders and pop-up collaborations with fellow creators. \nHannah started baking about 10 years ago while working in the music industry in Nashville and ended up falling in love with enough to change careers. DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Some weaving experience needed\nContinue your journey into the world of weaving at Beginning Weaving II on Saturday and Sunday\, March 22-23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Greenhouse Auditorium.\nThis 2-day class with instructor Sharon Bowles will be a continuation of Beginning Weaving 1\, but instead of everyone doing the same article\, students will pick their own project\, measure the warp\, beam the warp\, thread the heddles to their selected pattern\, thread the reed\, tie the warp to the cloth beam rod\, wind bobbins and weave a sample of their selected yarn. Students will then weave samples from the other looms\, giving them a wide variety of weave structures they can try out.\nThis course is a great way to continue your weaving journey!\n$235/person. She was taught to weave in a one-on-one class and wove two table runners in 12 (approximately) 2-hour lessons\, and she teaches the same method when she teaches. DESCRIPTION:Come see the artwork created by Dodd Holsapple during his current residency at a Pop-Up Art Show on Friday\, March 28 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Mansion Library.\nThe Southern California-based painter and sculptor has generated 18 paintings during his three-week residency at the Park\, all of which will be on display at the show. Sharon has experience in weaving with silk\, lace weaving\, 8-shaft pattern weaving\, parallel weaving\, block weaves\, and Shaker reproduction towels.\nShe has taught many workshops and classes to weavers’ guilds in Florida\, Ohio\, and Champaign-Urbana. She earned her Journeyman certification from the Weavers Guild of Boston in 2021 and a master’s certification in April of 2022. DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner\nInspired by nature and the bountiful natural elements found at Allerton\, budding artists ages 13 to 18 are invited to learn and create at our Teen Art Studio: From Realism to Abstraction on Saturday\, March 29 from 1 to 4 p.m. in The Studio.\nHeartland Community College art professor Jane Camp will instruct students on observational drawing in graphite\, pen and ink and charcoal that move into abstractions of nature through collage and the various drawing media. No previous experience is necessary.\n$45/person (ages 13-18). A Professor of Art at Heartland Community College since 1994\, she has also taught at Tennessee State University\, Illinois State University and Richland College. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Illinois Wesleyan University and Master of Science and Master of Fine Arts from Illinois State University.\nJane’s photographs\, drawings and paintings have been shown in many local and national exhibitions. She successfully co-operated a photography business\, Outer Glow Photography for 10 years.\nMuch of her drawings and paintings focus on what she calls “Random Pages”: Random bits from nature that become enlarged and abstracted to suggest something beyond their origins. SUMMARY:The Farms: Intro to Beekeeping
DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner\nLearn about honey bees\, one of the most unusual insects in the world\, at Intro to Beekeeping on Sunday\, March 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. in The Studio. Bees can survive under diverse climate conditions and are one of the few insects that produce food for humans. And such a food! Keeping honey bees happy and healthy is essential.\nIn this class taught by Maggie Wachter students will learn the basics of starting a new hive: how to get bees\, the honey bee life cycle\, nutrition\, equipment and what to do about mites. Would-be beekeepers and others with a lively interest in nature are welcome.\n$20/person. Please alert the photographer or videographer if you do not want your image taken.\nAbout the Instructor\nWhen Maggie Wachter began her social work degree at the University of Illinois in 2008\, she had no idea that she would become a beekeeper. As for honey\, she kept a single jar in the back of her kitchen cabinet for recipes. Today she is a master beekeeper who never eats sugar.\nMaggie received her first hive as a gift in 2008. By 2010\, she was enrolled in the Master Beekeeper course at the University of Florida. From there\, things happened quickly to turn her life around. In 2012\, she started teaching beekeeping for Parkland Community Education and today she is a beekeeping teacher\, honey judge\, mead maker and master beekeeper.\nAlong the way\, she met fellow beekeeper Steve Halfar. Together\, they pollinate apple orchards\, chase black locust honey and keep their 50-odd hives thriving. They have participated in honeybee research at the U of I and USDA.\nDuring the summer\, you can find Maggie and Steve selling honey at the Urbana Market at the Square on the first Saturday of every month.
