SUMMARY:Arboretum Hosta Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:Discover inspiring hosta varieties\, companion plants\, and garden design ideas to bring to your own landscape at an Arboretum Hosta Garden Tour on Saturdays\, August 8 or September 12 from 10-11 a.m. at the Illinois Arboretum (1800 S. Lincoln Ave.\, Urbana). \nLed by Illinois Prairie Hosta Society (IPHS) members\, this tour will include an introduction to not only a huge variety of hosta\, but will also include some native plant species\, over 50 varieties of companion plants\, and an overview of how the garden design has evolved over the years. Students will leave with ideas to take home to their own gardens! \n$10/person*. Register here. Registration closes 3 days prior to the tour or when capacity is reached. All sales are final. \n*Limited metered parking spots are available in the lot near the Noel Welcome Garden and along South Lincoln Avenue. Please alert the photographer or videographer if you do not want your image taken. \n\nAbout the Society\nIllinois Prairie Hosta Society (IPHS) was formed in 2004. For several years\, they worked with Allerton Park to create an IPHS Hosta Display Garden there; some of that garden is still in existence today and is now a project of Master Gardeners. In 2010\, as part of our mission to promote the genus Hosta through a variety of educational means\, and at the invitation of the then Director of the Arboretum\, Bill Kruideneier\, we voted to establish a display garden at the Arboretum. From the fall of 2010\, until the spring of 2014\, volunteer members of IPHS donated money for hardscape and the purchase of shad companion plants\, designed and created a wishlist for plants to be installed in the garden\, donated their own mostly originator stock (OS – meaning purchased from the original hybridizer of the plant\, or grown from the original plant)\, and installed\, labeled\, and maintained the original area of the Garden. In The Hosta Garden at the University of Illinois Arboretum was awarded the American Hosta Society’s (AHS) designation as a National Display Garden.

SUMMARY:Cooking with Herbs
DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner \nLearn how to grow herbs in the Central Illinois climate\, pot herbs in a container\, and then taste how they are used in a meal at Cooking with Herbs on Saturday\, Sept 12 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m in the Herb Garden and Evergreen Lodge. \nJoin Kay Karnes and Piatt County Master Gardeners in the Herb Garden to begin this workshop\, where you will receive a tour of the garden\, which is certified by the Illinois Herb Association. \nThen\, adjourn to the classroom in Evergreen Lodge to learn how to grow herbs and plant a container of herbs that do well in Central Illinois.  Finally\, a buffet lunch prepared by Leah Bodine of the Greenhouse Cafè will be provided along with cooking tips to use herbs and spices in various recipes. \n$50/person. Please alert the photographer or videographer if you do not want your image taken. \n\nAbout the Instructor\nIllinois Extension Piatt County Master Gardener Volunteers are a dedicated group of trained community volunteers who combine a passion for gardening with a commitment to public service. Through the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener program\, volunteers receive research-based horticultural training and use that knowledge to educate\, inspire\, and support residents across Piatt County. Piatt County Master Gardeners support two educational gardens at Allerton Park\, the Herb Garden\, located next to the mansion\, and the Welcome Garden\, located between the visitors center and café. \nKay Carnes’ love of gardening began at an early age\, “helping” her father in his vegetable garden and has continued throughout her life.  She has been a Master Gardener\, a member and past president of the Illinois Herb Association\, and a panelist on MidAmerican Gardener since 1995.  Kay and her husband Dave live on 2.5 acres outside of Monticello\, a property that allows her ample space to pursue her passion.  Her areas of expertise are herbs\, vegetables\, and seed saving.

DESCRIPTION:Experience Level: Beginner \nLearn the basics of working with a loom at Beginning Weaving I (Midday) on Saturday\, Sept. 12 through October 10 from 10:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. in the Greenhouse Auditorium. \nThis 5-week class led by Sharon Bowles will encompass all aspects of beginner weaving as students create a table runner. Students will become familiar with weaving terminology\, parts of the loom\, figuring the weaving pattern for the width of the loom and project\, measuring out the warp\, beaming the warp back to front\, threading heddles\, threading the reed\, tying on the warp\, and winding bobbins. \n$250/person*. Register here. Registration closes Sept. 2 or when capacity is reached. All sales are final. \n*Students should bring a 4-shaft loom if they have one. Sharon has experience in weaving with silk\, lace weaving\, 8-shaft pattern weaving\, parallel weaving\, block weaves\, and Shaker reproduction towels. \nShe has taught many workshops and classes to weavers’ guilds in Florida\, Ohio\, and Champaign-Urbana. She earned her Journeyman certification from the Weavers Guild of Boston in 2021 and a master’s certification in April of 2022. Most recently\, Sharon taught Beginning Weaving I at The Farms\, and a 2-day workshop in four shaft patterns for the Champaign-Urbana Spinners and Weavers Guild.

DESCRIPTION:Experience level: Beginner (Ages 18+) \nExplore the basics of poetry in Exploring Nature & Life Through Mary Oliver’s Poetry on Saturday\, Sept.12 from 12-4 p.m. in The Studio. \nPoet Mary Oliver’s beloved poems like “Wild Geese” and “How I Go to the Woods” used nature as a way to explore life’s mysteries. Led by instructor Kate Herald\, students will explore some poetry basics like allegory and meter using Oliver’s poetry about the same kinds of flora and fauna that can be found at Allerton.
