Visitors come to Allerton from all over to escape the distractions and noise of everyday life. In a time where we are constantly connected, but surprisingly disconnected from each other, we can utilize part of what Robert Allerton created that still exists today – a place where you can experience a simpler time.
In the early 1900s, Robert Allerton provided his friends an escape from the suffocating smog of the city. They would come to “the Farms” in rural Monticello, where they could breathe fresh air… sleep in silence… and see the stars. He allowed them to physically detach from reality in a setting that not only welcomed that – it encouraged it. He provided an atmosphere that got people out of their normal routines and feelings.
Whether you just want a break from the constant pull of social media and texts, or need a starting point to make a bigger change – this Digital Detox event provides an opportunity to utilize Allerton’s unique atmosphere and make a commitment to truly get away.
Learn about practicing mindfulness in a workshop from the U of I Psychological Services Center, relax with a massage from Essential Massage Therapy (reservations/payment taken on-site), or explore the Mansion on a guided tour. Saturday night, enjoy conversation over a cash bar and dinner, and leave feeling refreshed after yoga on Sunday morning (mats provided on a first come, first served basis).
In addition, guests are encouraged to take advantage of their screen-free time in the natural, relaxing setting. Browse through the hundreds of books in the Library, bundle up and go for a hike, play a board game, work on a puzzle, or just sit and enjoy the view….
