Allerton Closed To The Public

March 16, 2020 by Steve Hoffman

UPDATE (3/27, 10am): Limited trails are open; Gardens, Roads, and Facilities remain closed. Find updated information here.

In order to comply with University of Illinois and State of Illinois recommendations for social distancing and limiting travel, Allerton Park and Retreat Center will be closed to the public until further notice. This includes all gardens, trails, roads, and facilities.

Although we were hopeful we could remain open, it is our responsibility to do everything we possibly can to limit the spread of this virus, which unfortunately includes asking the public not to travel or gather here. As businesses and venues around the state continue to close, large public spaces like Allerton become the last remaining vector for social respite, and therefore also risk becoming part of the problem. We are doing our part to “flatten the curve” and reduce the rapid spread of COVID-19. By doing this, we can save lives and return to a more normal way of living as quickly as possible.

This is a difficult time and we regret that, in this case, Allerton can’t offer you healing and peace as it has done so many times in the past. Please know we are working closely with University of Illinois officials and will begin to open in some fashion as soon as it’s safe to do so.

For the most up-to-date COVID-19 related information and resources from the University, visit covid19.illinois.edu.

In a time of constantly changing information and uncertainty, we thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we attempt to keep our community and employees safe.

On behalf of our staff, we wholeheartedly look forward to coming back together with you and celebrating all the wonderful things Allerton has to offer.

If you have questions or comments, please contact us at allertoninfo@illinois.edu.
