Re-Discovering Allerton in August

I recently stumbled upon a creative, whimsical song that a young, unknown songwriter wrote about the month of “August”. In her song she laments that August is “the only thing between her and school”.  Though I’m not heading back to school, and neither are many of you, I think we all could agree with several other sentiments that this young writer expressed in her song saying “It’d be nice if you (August) just slowed down”, or “Wouldn’t it be great if there were two of you, then summer might not feel so short”!

I’ve lived in the Mid-West for most of my adult years and the month of August seems so predictable! Somehow we manage to crawl through our spring months, just hoping for a glimmer of those long…. warm… summer days again. Finally, May hits, full speed, and we get our first glimpse that summer (aka: Memorial Weekend) has actually arrived….Let the Fun Begin!! Seems then we get carried away with those long holiday weekends, and before you can blink a few times….we are off to another one….4th of July….Perfect!  Now we are fully in our summer  “state of mind” and at Allerton Park, that includes concerts in the park, hikes on the trails, formal gardens in full bloom, bike rides in the park, runners training for their next race, weekend weddings and “I Do” nuptials in every garden in the park! Add a unique wine dinner, family camp out, day camps, food trucks at the concerts, weekly corporate retreats at the Mansion, ongoing client tours of the Mansion and gardens and dodging countless summer storms….and you have the makings of very busy summer at Allerton Park! The rest of the world stays busy too and has been reminded of “Christmas in July” bargains, school supplies sales, endless BOGO shoes sales, campers or new car sales, countless advertisements for vacation deals…..and three blinks later, its’ August….and panic settles in like our young songwriter suggests: “August please don’t go by way too fast, I want to make these sun-filled summer days last”!

If your summer has been fun, fun, fun but has gone by too fast and has been too busy, then maybe it’s time to unplug..…slow down..….and breathe in the beauty and warmth of August. Even knowing that a big change called “Fall” is about to nip at our heals, Allerton Park has so many wonderful new and exciting events for all ages that will be part of our fall, our holiday season, and our winter months this year! No need to lament the end of a fun summer season! Come out and enjoy the serenity of nature and breathe in August right here at your Park….or come out and enjoy the fun of a lively concert! Either way….as the young artist wrote “Since August is here, I guess I’ll say hello!” ~~~

Singer/ Songwriter: Autumn Banks: Hello August

August give me one more month of sun
At least just stick around a while
‘Cause summer’s halfway done
And you’re the only thing between me and school

August please don’t go by way too fast
I want to make these sun-filled summer days last
And it’d be nice if you just slowed down

How did all these days waste away?
Where did July even go?
I was hoping that the summer would last a little longer
But since August is here I guess I’ll say hello!

August you have only just begun
I’m wishing for a month filled with warmth and sun
And I’d like it if you chased the clouds away

August I’ve got so much left to do
Wouldn’t it be great if there were two of you
Then summer might not feel so short

How did all these days waste away?
Where did July even go?
I was hoping that the summer would last a little longer
But since August is here I guess I’ll say hello!
